MSE Index slightly higher as BOV pushes further forward

The MSE Equity Total Return Index closed marginally higher, registering an increase of 0.061% to close at 8,999.959 points. Out of the eight active equities, only three registered gains, however these managed to compensate for the negative tone set by the other equities. A total turnover of €813,844 was spread over 49 trades.

In the banking sector, Bank of Valletta plc continued where it left off yesterday by pushing further ahead by 0.38% to close at €2.108.This was the outcome of fourteen deals involving 325,223 shares, making it the most liquid equity for the session. A slim trading volume over a single trade in HSBC Bank Malta plc caused the equity to edge 0.05% lower. Lombard Bank Malta plc traded flat, despite the four transactions which generated a turnover of € 50,063.80.

MIDI plc was a major drag on the index as it registered a devaluation of 3.13%, giving up its previous gains posted earlier this week. A total of 100,000 shares changed hands over three deals at a price of €0.31.

GlobalCapital plc shares followed suit as the equity lost 2.7% to close at €0.36. This was the outcome of a single deal of 10,000 shares.

Also within the insurance sector, Mapfre Middlesea plc enjoyed a 0.87% advancement, registered on just one deal involving 4,350 shares – closing at €1.86.

Malta International Airport plc climbed to €4.66, which translates to an increase of 0.22% on the previous closing price. A combined 5,200 shares were exchanged spread over two trades.

Malta Properties Company plc also traded on slim volume as a single trade of 3,220 shares was registered. This deal was in line with the previous session’s negative sentiment as it shaved a further 0.39% off the share price, closing at €0.508.

In the corporate debt market, a total of 10 issues were active during the session of which four closed higher, three lost ground while three remained unchanged. The 3.5% Bank of Valletta plc Notes 2030 S2 T1 saw the largest price variation as it declined by 2.49% to close at €95.55.

 

The sovereign debt market was very active today as a turnover of €1,625,083 was generated. A total of 16 issues were active during the session, 13 of which headed north. The major catalyst for this high turnover was the 2.1% MGS 2039 which was responsible for over half of the total volume traded. The result was a 0.33% gain in the price of the issue making it the joint best performer for the day together with the 2.4% MGS 2041.
