MSE Index recovers as banking sector posts solid gains

The MSE Equity Total Return Index finished the week by paring some of the losses made in previous sessions. The index closed the session 0.745% higher at 8,504.792, as out of six equities, four increased in value and only one drifted lower.

The banking industry was the catalyst for this positive performance as its two active equities were responsible for 87% of the total turnover. Bank of Valletta plc logged the best performance of the session, a 2.8% advancement in the share price, to finish trading at €1.799. A total of 94,646 shares were exchanged over 25 transactions. HSBC Bank Malta plc was also traded on heavy volumes as €148,251 worth of shares were traded over ten deals. The outcome of these deals was a 1.09% gain in the price of the equity, to close at €1.86.

GO plc was traded on three occasions, as 4,000 shares changed hands during the session. As a result, the equity climbed 0.57% to settle at €3.55.

Similarly, Plaza Centres plc was traded on slim volume as four transactions worth €5,319 in total pushed the price upwards by 0.89%, to close at €1.02.

The sole negative mover was RS2 Software plc as it continued its downward trend by posting further falls, this time of 0.07%. The equity closed at €1.52 as 9,000 shares were traded over five deals.

Malta International Airport plc, despite being featuring in two separate deals, closed unchanged.

The sovereign debt market bounced back from the previous two sessions’ performances, as 11 out of the 14 active issues registered an upward movement, while only one closed lower. The best performance was registered by the 2.1% MGS 2039 which posted gains of 0.92%.  The onlyissue which traded in negative territory was the 3.3% MGS 2024 - down by 0.08%.

Performances in the corporate debt market were more balanced as six issues drifted lower, five appreciated and the remaining six active issues traded flat. Topping the list of gainers was the 4% Stivala Group Finance plc Secured € 2027, as it advanced by 0.49%, to close at €103. On the other hand, the 4.8% Bank of Valletta plc Notes 2018 registered the worst daily performance as it fell by 1.48%.
