MSE Index commences the week in negative territory

MSE Daily Trading Report, December 4, 2017

The MSE Equity Total Return Index started off the week in the red, as it declined by 0.938%, to close at 8,425.01 points. A total of 11 equities were active during the session, of which, five depreciated and two ticked higher. Total turnover amounted to €248,274 spread over 56 deals.

As opposed to Friday, the banking industry was today the worst performer. Bank of Valletta plc posted a 2.67% loss, whileHSBC Bank Malta plc drifted 3.17% lower. The former accounted for almost 68% of total daily turnover, spread over 31 trades, while the latter saw 2,312 shares exchanging hands across two transactions. The respective prices at the end of the session read €1.751 and €1.801.

Elsewhere, despite registering mere activity, Malta International Airport plc (MIA) and Medserv plc were also in the red. A single trade in MIA resulted in a 0.22% fall in price, as it closed at €4.64, while another singular trade in Medserv plc yielded a minimal 0.09% slip in price, to settle at €1.12.

Simonds Farsons Cisk plc was traded on three occasions, as 910 shares changed hands during the session. As a result, the equity declined by 0.11%. to close at €8.75.

RS2 Software plc and MIDI plc were the only two equities to post gains, as they closed at €1.539 and €0.35, respectively. The IT company managed to pare some of its recent losses by ticking 1.25% higher, while MIDI plc appreciated by 1.45% over a single trade of 4,500 shares.

PG plc was active for the first time after falling ex-div on Thursday. Despite this, the equity closed unchanged at €1.45. the company’s board was scheduled to meet earlier today to consider, and if thought fit, distribute an interim dividend – which shall be paid on December 11. Moreover, unaudited interim results are due to be announced on December 20.

Meanwhile,GO plc, Plaza Centres plc and Malta Properties Company plc were all active during the session but also closed unchanged at €3.55, €1.02 and €0.468, respectively.

Thesovereign debt market was once again in the black, as seven out of the 11 active issues posted gains, while only three closed lower. More than half the total turnover was raised through trading in the 2.1% MGS 2039 issuance. Despite this fact, this was the single issue to close unchanged at €102.20.

On the contrary, performances in the corporate debt market leaned towards the negative end of the spectrum, as out of the 13 active issues, four gained and six declined. Topping the list of gainers was the 5% Global Capital plc Unsecured € 2021 issuance, as it advanced by 1.55% to close at €99.01. On the other hand, the 6% Pendergardens Developments plc Secured 2022 Series II issuance registered the biggest dip, as it fell by 2.66% - both of which were active in thin volume.
