Four equities lift index higher

MSE Daily Trading Report, December 5, 2017

The MSE Equity Total Return Index curbed half of yesterday’s decline, as the index gained 0.496% to close at 8,466.765 points. A total of seven equities were active during the session, of which, four advanced and three lost ground. Total turnover amounted to €162,030 spread over 30 deals.

In the banking industry both HSBC Bank Malta plc and Bank of Valletta plc shares conitinued were they left off yesterday, as both equties declined. HSBC shares lost 0.61% of their value, to close at €1.79, while BOV shares shrinked by 0.63%, to close at €1.74.

International Hotel Investments plc eased the downward pressure, as its shares appreciated by 6.71%, to close at € 0.62. A total of 7,236 shares were exchanged over two transactions.

Telecommunications firm, GO plc, was also in positive territory, as its shares gained 0.85%, to close the session at €3.58. A total of two transactions saw 3,276 shares exchange hands.

A single trade of 1,100 shares in Malta International Airport plc shares pushed the equity’s price up by 0.43%. The price at the end of today’s session read €4.66. Similarly, mere trading in Grand Harbour Marina plc shares triggered a price appreciation of 5.1%, to close at €0.763.

On a negative note, five trades worth €17,050 in Malta Properties Company plc shares caused the price to fall by 1.7% and to close at €0.46.

Following the close of today’s session, PG plc announced that its board of directors resolved to distribute a net interim dividend of €1.7 million equivalent to €0.01574 net (€0.02422 gross) per ordinary share. The dividend will be paid on December 11, 2017 to the ordinary shareholders who were on the company’s register of members as at the close of business on December 1, 2017. Despite the expectation for this announcement, the equity failed to register any activity during the day.

In the sovereign debt market a total of eight issues were active, of which only the 3% MGS 2040 (I) closed in the red. The 2.3% MGS 2029 (II) registered today’s strongest performance by closing 0.4% higher at €110.39.      

In the corporate debt market a total of 17 issues were active of which seven headed south, while three closed higher. The 6% Island Hotels Group Holdings plc € 2024 registered the weakest performance, as the bond price decreased by 2.1%, to close €105.50. On the other hand, the  4.4% Von der Heyden Group Finance plc Unsecured € 2024 registered the strongest performance during the session as the bond closed 1.01% higher at €99.49.
