Equities and corporate bonds trade lower

The MSE Equity Total Return Index surrendered the gains registered in the previous session as it posted losses of 0.264% to close at 8,637.842 points. A total of nine equities were active during the session, of which four declined and only one advanced. Total turnover amounted to €390,240 spread over 64 deals.

The banking industry was the primary drag on the index as Bank of Valletta plc and HSBC Bank Malta plc shares declined. BOV shares contracted by 1.11% to finish trading at €1.78. The equity generated a turnover of €168,038 over 31 trades making it the most liquid equity of the session. Similarly, HSBC shares lost 0.57% of their value, to close at €1.75 after just over 40,000 shares were exchanged over 12 deals. In the same sector, a total of 8,500 FIMBank plc shares were traded over two deals but the equity closed unchanged at $0.69.

The only positive performer for the day was Malta International Airport plc as it posted solid gains of 1.28% to end the session at €4.76. This was the result of four transactions in which 5,300 shares changed hands.

MIDI plc recorded an identical performance to yesterday’s session as it drifted lower by another 0.57%, settling at €0.346. A total of 154,050 shares were exchanged over four deals.

RS2 Software plc followed suit as a single transaction worth €9,856 notched the price down by 0.65% to close at €1.52.

Mapfre Middlesea plc,Simonds Farsons Cisk plc and PG plc were all active however they all traded flat.

Yields in the sovereign debt market were down as the Central Bank of Malta revised its bid prices higher. The 5.2% MGS 2031 registered today’s strongest performance by closing 0.85% higher at €143.20. However, 4.1% MGS 2034 and the 4.45% MGS 2032 posted considerable losses of 1.87% and 1.82% respectively on thin trading.            

Conversely, in the corporate debt market a total of 17 issues were active of which nine headed south, while two closed higher. The 5.75% International Hotel Investments plc Unsecured € 2025 registered the weakest performance, as the bond’s price decreased by 2.6%. On the other hand, the  5.1% 1923 Investments plc Unsecured € 2024 logged gains of 0.46%.
