MSE Index extends its positive run

MSE Daily Trading Report, April 12, 2018

The MSE Equity Total Return Index extended its positive trend as it posted further gains of 0.363% to close at 8,558.007 points. A total of eight equties were active of which four gained ground while only one headed south. A total turnover of €334,082 was generated between 31 trades.

In the banking sector, HSBC Bank Malta plc gained 1.19% to close at €1.70 as ten trades of 54,196 shares were executed. The bank held its Annual General Meeting today, in which all resolutions on the agenda were approved. The Chief Executive Officer, Mr Andrew Beane gave an overview of the results of 2017 and explained the bank’s strategy to grow the business in Malta, as approved by the Board of Directors in February. Mr Beane also clarified that the bank is operating on a business as usual basis, in spite of the recent media report suggesting that HSBC Holdings plc is considering exiting the Maltese market. He also reiterated that in line with the bank’s policy, the board is choosing not to comment on media speculation.

Its peer, Bank of Valletta plc provided information to the market regarding the Scrip Dividend Programme. Subject to approval at the Annual General Meeting, shareholders on the register as at April 10, 2018, have the option to receive their dividend either in cash, or by the issue of new shares at a price which has now been established at €1.667. The attribution price was calculated by applying a 5% discount on the three-day average share price, based on trading effected between April 9 and April 11, 2018. The equity closed unchanged at €1.75 despite generating a turnover of €44,774.

Meanwhile FIMBank plc shares climbed 0.92% on a single trade of 47,764 shares to close at $0.55.

Similarly, a single transaction of 14,800 the Malta Properties Company plc shares pushed the price upwards by 1.33% to €0.458.The company announced today that its forthcoming Annual General Meeting will be held on June 13, 2018.

GO plcwas the only negative mover of the session, as it drifted 2.23% lower on slim volume.

The retail conglomerate, PG plc was up 0.77% to €1.31 as a result of three trades of a combined 27,650 shares.

Mapfre Middlesea plcand Malta International Airport plc were active but they closed unchanged at €2.10 and €4.88 respectively.

In the corporate debt market, out of 14 active issues, four headed south and three gained ground. The3.75% Premier Capital plc Unsecured € 2026 registered the largest decline of 0.87% to close the session at €103.10. The best performer was the 3.5% Bank of Valletta plc € Notes 2030 S1 T1 which drifted 0.5% higher over a deal worth €25,375.

In the soverign debt market, a total of 13 issues were active, all of which lost ground with the exception of the1.5% MGS 2027 (I) which closed 1.34% higher at €103.96. On the other hand, the worst performer was 2.2% MGS 2035 (I) as it lost 1.03% in value.
