Banking equities drag index lower

MSE Daily Trading Report, May 10, 2017

The MSE Equity Total Return Index continued on its negative trend as it closed at 8,366.35 points, translating toa lossof 0.57%. A total of eight equities were active during the session, of which four lost ground and another one headed north. A total turnover of €309,765 was generated across 51 transactions.

In the banking industry, Bank of Valletta plc logged the worst performance of the session with a 2.86% loss in value, down to €1.70. Trading volume totalled 41,250 shares over17 transactions.

HSBC Bank Malta plc followed suit as its share price dropped 1.18% to close at €1.68. A total of 11,158 shares traded across five deals.

Lombard Bank Malta plctopped off a negative session for the banking industry with a 0.85% decline, settling at €2.32. Lombard was the most liquid equity as three transactions of 32,000 shares were registered.

RS2 Software plc also traded heavily as  32,000 shares changed hands over 17 trades. As a result, the equity drifted 0.81% lower to €1.23.

The only positive mover was MIDI plc as a single transaction of 10,000 shares pushed the price up by 18.71% to €0.368.

In the sovereign debt market, 14 issues were active, four of which headed north while another sevenclosed in the red. The2.5% MGS 2036 (I) registered the largest increase during the session as it advanced by 0.32%,to close at €109.49. Meanwhile, the 2.1% MGS 2039 (I) declined by 0.27% to close at €102.12.

In the corporate debt market a total of 18 issues were active of which four headed south, while six closed higher. The 5.3% Mariner Finance plc Unsecured € 2024 was down 1.31% to close at  €108.55. On the other end of the spectrum, the 4.35% SD Finance plc Unsecured € 2027 climbed 0.43% to €104.75.
