Positive sentiment sends local equities higher

MSE Daily Trading Report, June 05, 2018
The MSE Total Return Index gained a further 0.8% to close the day at 8,713.614 points. Nine equities were active as seven gained, RS2 Software plc shares traded flat at €1.17 and on the downside Malta Properties plc shed almost 2% to end the session at €0.54. Trading value across the equities’ market reached €306,000 as 32 transactions were executed.
In the banking sector, HSBC Bank Malta plc gained another 1.7% following yesterday’s 7.1% jump in its share price. The equity closed the day at €1.84.Four deals worth €117,500 were recorded. Bank of Valletta plc gained 0.6% or €0.01 to return to the €1.76 level as seven transactions of 41,550 shares were traded.
International Hotel Investments plc had another positive session as the equity gained another 3% to close at €0.68. Nearly 51,000 shares changed hands over eight deals. One deal of 3,000 shares in Grand Harbour marina plc shares sent the equity higher by 5.3% or €0.04. The equity closed at €0.79.
PG plc also also closed in positive territory with a by 3.2% gain as the equity regained the €1.29 price level. One deal of nearly 15,000 shares was recorded.Trident Estates plc also closed higher with a 1.6% gain to finish the session at €1.30 while Medserv plc gained 2% to close at €1.06. One deal of 12,000 shares was executed.
In the sovereign debt market, yields were generally lower (bond prices higher) as eight issues gained, three declinedand and the 2.1% MGS 2039 closed flat at 101.05. The long-dated 2.4% MGS 2041 gained 91 basis points to €106.13 while the 12-year 5.25% MGS 2030 gained 24 basis points.
Last week, the Treasury announced the €65 million issuance of the 62+ Malta Government Savings Bond for 2018, which may be increased by a further €35 million, given that there is sufficient demand. Applicants can be any individual born in the year 1956 or earlier. Existing holders of the 2017 bond issues may also apply, however preference shall be given to new applicants.
Turnover in the corporate debt market reached €0.3m as 14 issues were active. The 4.5% Hili Properties 2025 was the most liquid issue as three transactions worth €83,000 were recorded. The bond traded flat at €106.57. On a positive note the 3.75% Bortex Group Finance 2027 gained 2.4% to close at €103.95 while the 4.5% Grand Harbour Marina 2027 declined by 50 basis points.
