Banking industry drags MSE index down

MSE Daily Trading Report, August 7, 2018

The MSE Equity Total Return Index continued on yesterday’s negative territory as it lost on 0.749% to close the session at 8,657.795 points. A total of six equities were active during the session ,of which three closed lower and only one gained ground. A total turnover of €150,072 was generated between 37 transactions.

In the banking sector, Bank of Valletta plc was the weakest performer as it declined by 3.13% to close at the €1.55 price level. The equity was responsible for over two-thirds of total turnover as 66,782 shares traded across 23 deals.

Its peer, HSBC Bank Malta plc was another drag on the index this session as it drifted 1.06% lower to €1.87. Trading volume totalled 10,460 shares, generated across ten transactions.

In the telecommunications sector, GO plc was up by 0.6% to €3.38 as a result of just one deal over a slim volum

A single transactions of 9,200 in  Malita Investments plc shares shaved 1.69% off the share price, settling at €0.87.

Elsewhere, Malta International Airport plc andMIDI plc both traded flat at €5.70 and €0.478 respectively.

On thecorporate debt front,a total of 16 issues were active of whicheight headed north while three headed into negative territory. The 4% International Hotel Investments plc Unsecured € 2026 headed the list of fallers with a 0.97% decline in price to €102.50. On the other hand, the 5.3% Mariner Finance plc Unsecured € 2024 and the3.75% Bortex Group Finance plc Unsecured € 2027 were the best performers, with an identical gain in price of 0.92%.

In the sovereign debt front there were 15 active issues, ten of which gained ground while another three posted falls. The6.6% MGS 2019 was the worst performer with a 0.18% loss in value. On the other end of the spectrum, the 2.4% MGS 2041 (I) registered the largest gains as it registered a 0.86% gain to €105.50.
