Asian stock markets closed mixed on Friday in quiet holiday trading, with several markets closed for the Good Friday holiday. Worries about a possible US fed funds increase in April continued to weigh on investor sentiment. The Japanese and Chinese markets closed higher, while South Korea and Taiwan closed lower.
The Nikkei advanced for the first time in three days gaining 0.7 percent with a weaker yen boosting exporters’ shares. Buying by investors who wanted to secure dividends and other shareholders benefits before companies close their books at the end of the fiscal year in late March also aided shares. Among the major exporters, Sony, Toshiba and Canon were higher as were Toyota and Honda. Mitsui and Mitsubishi also advanced. February consumer price index excluding fresh food was unchanged on the year.
The Shanghai Composite added 0.6 percent. However the Kospi and Taiex slipped 0.1 percent and 0.4 percent respectively.
