BOV and HSBC push MSE Index into positive territory

The MSE Equity Total Return Index gained ground, as it closed 0.897% higher at 9,469.125 points. Nine equities were active, of which four headed north while another two closed in the opposite direction. A total turnover of €210,822 was generated over 35 deals.

The banking sector enjoyed a positive session as both active banks registered gains. Bank of Valletta plc advanced by 2.44%, to close at €1.05. This was the result of five deals involving 6,200 shares. A total turnover of €6,394 was recorded.

The bank announced that on December 16, 2019, the Court of Appeal upheld the appeals filed by BOV and BOVAM in a number of cases. BOV had filed an appeal last year, March 14, 2018, relating to the decision given by the arbiter for financial services in relation to a number of LVMMPF claims.

Its peer, HSBC Bank Malta plc headed the list of gainers, as it closed 5.93% higher at €1.25. Three deals involving 2,500 shares were executed, generating a total turnover of €3,004.

Lombard Bank Malta plc announced that the directors shall meet on March 23, 2020, to consider, and if deemed fit, approve its audited accounts for 2019. During this meeting, a final dividend declaration shall be considered, which will then be recommended to the bank’s AGM. The AGM will be held on April 23, 2020.

One deal of 3,529 Mapfre Middlesea plc shares, pushed the price 0.93% higher to €2.16. As a result, a total turnover of €7,623 was recorded.

PG plc was also active over a single deal, in which 7,600 shares changed hands. This generated a total turnover of €13,908 and resulted into a 1.67% increase in price, to close at €1.83.

A few minutes before the session ended, a sole deal of 12,252 International Hotel Investments plc shares dragged the price into the red by 0.65%, to close at €0.76. A total turnover of €9,312 was generated.

Similarly, MaltaPost plc traded once over 2,500 shares, to close 0.76% lower at €1.30. Total turnover amounted to €3,250.

Malta International Airport plc traded 12 times over a spread of 6,485 shares. This generated a total turnover of €44,747. The equity’s previous closing price of €6.90 was left unaltered.

The most liquid equity was RS2 Software plc, as it recorded a total value of €110,843. A total of 52,037 shares changed hands over nine deals, leaving no impact on the previous closing price of €2.14, despite falling to €2.10 intra-day.

Two deals involving 22,800 BMIT Technologies plc shares did not change the equity’s price of €0.515. A total turnover of €11,742 was recorded.

In the corporate debt market, 28 issues were active, of which 12 traded higher while another four lost ground. The best performance was recorded by the 6% AX Investments Plc € 2024, as it closed 2.68% higher at €112.95.  Conversely, a 0.99% decline was registered by the 5% Dizz Finance plc Unsecured € 2026, as it closed at par.

In the Prospects MTF market there were five active bonds, of which gainers and losers tallied to one a-piece. A single deal pushed 5% Smartcare Finance plc Secured € 2029 0.08% higher to €101.98. Meanwhile, 4.75% Orion Finance plc € Unsecured 2027 was down by 0.49%, as it closed at €101.50.

In the sovereign debt market, out of eight active issues,  two advanced while five ended the session on a negative note. The 2.5% MGS 2036 (I) registered the largest increase in price of 0.75%, as it closed at €134. On the other hand, the 2.3% MGS 2029 (II) lost 0.82%, ending the session at €121.
