Malta International Airport plc – Traffic Results – September 2013

Malta International Airport announced that it hit yet another record last month as September traffic increased by 10.8 per cent over the same period last year.

“This is the latest instalment of good news for Malta’s tourism industry, including today’s revelation that British Airways is returning to the island,” MIA CEO Markus Klaushofer said.

“It is great news that British Airways has decided to fly back to Malta from next summer. We would like to thank the Ministry of Tourism and the Malta Tourism Authority for their continuous efforts and support in attracting yet another airline to the island,” he added.

September saw 452,294 passengers pass through the airport, a great follow up to the more than 500,000 passengers registered in August, MIA’s best month ever. 

Cumulatively, the results for the first nine months of the year show an increase of nine per cent when compared to the same period last year, thanks mostly to an increase in seat capacity. In all, there were 3.2 million passenger movements for this year so far. 

Germany and Italy were the main contributors to September’s success, with increase of 33.7 and 19.1 per cent respectively. Traffic from France grew by 14.9 per cent while UK passengers increased by 1.1 per cent. Spain recorded a decrease of 6.4 per cent.

Aircraft movements and seat capacity also increased by 10.6 and 12.1 per cent respectively in September over the same period last year.

The average seat load factor (SLF) decreased by one percentage point to 84.6 per cent.

Meanwhile, the maximum take-off weight (MTOW) increased by 11.2 per cent and cargo mail increased by 3.9 per cent.
